YOURSAY ‘Najib and all board members must be held accountable.’
Minister: Sack 1MDB board as last option
Right Move: Housing and Local Government Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan, your reasoning does not hold water.
If you are the owner of a business and your board whom you have entrusted to run the business cannot explain, despite numerous requests by you, where billions of ringgit belonging to the company have gone, will you still patiently wait for them to take their own sweet time to appear at an inquiry and let them continue to run the business?
Rahman, you have failed if that is how you run your ministry. The right thing to do is, even if the board of directors is not sacked, they should be suspended to allow an independent team to conduct its investigations.
Of course, they will still have to attend an inquiry to shed light on where the money has gone. In fact, a police report needs to be made on the missing billions and let our very efficient police begin immediate investigation.
As for you, Rahman, you look smart but judging from what you have said, I would hesitate to appoint you to run my company.
Swipenter: Indeed, with the kind of reasoning given by Rahman, no wonder blatant cases of corruption, negligence, misappropriation in all government departments and agencies highlighted by the auditor-general in his annual reports go unabated year after year.
Indeed, why worry? Termination is the last option and only if you don't cooperate with the investigation, assuming one is launched. No wonder accountability and responsibility are not taken seriously by civil servants.
Onyourtoes: Rahman, I think you don't understand what is conflict of interest and protecting one's vested interest.
Even if we have allowed the auditing to proceed as planned (which I disagree), the information gathering and investigation must be sourced from neutral parties.
How can you expect the board of directors to be neutral when auditing and investigations are being done on them?
The issue is not just whether or not the directors are willing to testify. The issue is also whether they will be hiding or manipulating information.
Personally, I think 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) fiasco has gone far beyond auditing stage. The police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) should have arrested them and started investigation months ago.
Saphire: Onyourtoes, I agree with you wholeheartedly on your suggestion. But can you trust those three institutions to really find the culprits? Not in my wildest dreams.
Maharaja: Rahman, you can surely sack the board of 1MDB as sacking them from their positions of responsibility does not mean that they ceased to be accountable for any misappropriation of funds and police action can still be taken against them, even after they are sacked.
In fact, it is advantageous to sack them with immediate effect to avoid important documents from being tampered with.
Factnot Fiction: Umno, make up your mind. The house is on fire and you say don’t fight the fire until we find out who has started the fire. DPM is right do the damage control, sack the board and replace them with trustworthy persons.
J Ng: Political plays can be quite cruel. As political appointees, 1MDB board members should have realised this. Going after the board members is an indirect attempt to put Najib in a 'corner'.
Sacking them at this point does not solve the financial problems. Najib as advisory chairman of 1MDB and MOF (Finance Ministry) cannot absolve himself for the mess. Irrespective of mismanagement, poor management or corruption, Najib and all board members must be held accountable.
Moon Keong: One-third of 1MDB’s debt is guaranteed by taxpayers' money. The company has twice almost failed to pay its debts.
Also allegations are raised about the existence of agreements improperly done, such as excessive payments to banks for investment services.
That said, Najib stressed that this issue will be addressed after the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has completed its investigations.
Retired Citizen: I can see that there is a lot of hanky-panky which Najib is trying to hide. By sacking the entire board, the possibility of Najib's roles in the debacles being exposed will be greater.
That is why Najib is protecting the board and at the same time protecting himself.
Anonymous_1372130686: Let them continue; probe what they did; charge them for impropriety, if any; punish them if they are found guilty.
But above all, be transparent and honest. No cover-up in all actions taken.
Anonymous_1423808262: Rahman Dahlan is at least consistent in one aspect - his unwavering support of Najib, together with Sabah speaker Salleh Said Keruak.
The former is tactful whilst the latter is brash. Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin plays both sides.
Vice-president Mohd Shafie Apdal is in Muhyiddin's corner whereas vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is weighing his options, and he may move over to Muhyiddin’s side if he can become DPM.
Vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein, of course, will wish Muhyiddin will make a blunder and later he will move in for the DPM’s post. This is court's intrigue from the Malacca sultanate’s days.
