Teoh Beng Hock's family has vowed to pursue the perpetrators of his death, despite the family accepting the government’s offer to settle the negligence suit.
"Whilst that resolves the civil suit, it certainly does not signal the end of the road in our search for justice for Beng Hock.
"We have the judgment of the Court of Appeal and we will now focus on the police and demand that further investigations be conducted in the matter.
"We will not give up until those responsible for his death are charged and punished and justice is served," the family said in a statement today.
On May 12, the Malaysian government, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and 10 MACC personnel agreed to an RM600,000 settlement for the negligence suit filed by Beng Hock's family.
Beng Hock ( left ) was found dead on July 15, 2009, after being held overnight at the Selangor MACC headquarters, located on 14th floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam.
In September last year, the Court of Appeal overturned the open verdict of a coroner’s inquest into the cause of Beng Hock's death.
The Court of Appeal also ruled that the death was "a result of, or which, was accelerated by an unlawful act or acts of persons unknown, inclusive of the MACC officers who were involved in the arrest and investigations of the deceased".
Family wants further investigations made
The settlement terms , in part, read: "On action against the 'assault and battery', the plaintiffs will rely on the Court of Appeal's decision for the matter to be further investigated by police and for anyone responsible for Teoh's death to be charged immediately."
The family's lawyer, Gobind Singh Deo ( left ), said his clients had also demanded, as part of the settlement, for the police to conduct further investigations into the matter and charge those persons responsible for Beng Hock's death.
On the settlement amount, the family said that there have been some critics who claimed that the compensation was too low.
In addressing this, the family said they had agreed to the settlement because the they have finally secured an admission of liability.
"To us, this marks a huge victory," said the family.
"We wish to state at the outset that to us, it is not the money which is of importance in this settlement but more the acceptance on part of the defendants that they are liable for Beng Hock's death."
