YOURSAY 'The pen is indeed mightier than the sword. Or in this case, a very large number of guns. Keep up the good work to keep the politicians honest.'
No more talk on weapons lost by police!
Speechless: "Other reporters can ask questions, Malaysiakini may not" - this is the childish retort of a schoolyard bully, not one expected of a minister.
The reporter's job is to ask questions, including tough and incisive ones, and the minister's job is to answer these questions with facts and provide coherent explanations.
Public interest is involved when firearms go missing, and the people have every right to question and pursue the matter until satisfactory answers and solutions are delivered.
HC: Malaysiakini journalist Lawrence Yong, well done. The pen is indeed mightier than the sword. Or in this case, a very large number of guns. Keep up the good work to keep the politicians honest.
LynMy: Nothing tells a story better than a video - it was simply disgusting to watch the display of blatant intimidation and the bullying of a newsman who was doing his job.
The repeated thumping of the reporter's shoulder could not be more repulsive. My respect for the team at Malaysiakini increases many folds today for the abuse you have to suffer to bring us the news. Thank you!
Anonymous_5fb: I feel sad and disgusted watching this video where a minister is shown blatantly intimidating a reporter who is doing his duty.
Sad because we have a home minister who acted more like a gangster than an honourable man. Disgusted because he accused Malaysiakini editors of spinning news without any basis.
Come on Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, it appeared that you have not learnt from the assault case filed against you by a Malay businessman which was settled out of court. In hindsight, you shouldn't be let off so easily.
Versey: I just want to commend Malaysiakini reporter Lawrence Yong for courageously doing his duty and keeping his composure in spite of intimidation from a minister, one who is notorious for uncontrollable temper.
Keep up the good work and be assured that we are all cheering you on.
YF: The score: Lawrence Yong and Malaysiakini 100, Zahid, 0. The rakyat clearly back Lawrence Yong who was brave enough to continue smiling in front of that ‘samseng' (gangster) from Umno.
Derock: Mr Home Minister, your conduct in public is watched by many and the photo showing you pointing your finger at the reporter will be viewed by many too. Your public display is disgusting.
Is this the way you want to teach our children? Shame on you. Unless, you have no shame at all.
Anonymous#70866269: Zahid, the management of Malaysiakini and its staff are also taxpayers. They have an obligation to their readers and have the right to find out the facts involved in the loss of 44 weapons by PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police).
Zahid's salary is paid by the public, and therefore he must give the facts before he can utter such ridiculous remarks about Malaysiakini.
Lim Chong Leong: Malaysiakini is always spinning news and Utusan Malaysia is always telling the truth.
That is why Utusan is always apologising to opposition politicians Lim Guan Eng, Lim Kit Siang, Karpal Singh, Nik Aziz Nik Mat, Mohamad Sabu and Husam Musa and immediately thereafter tell more ‘truth' about them.
Anonymous #039163649: Zahid, we are talking about guns, not pens and pencils being misplaced and missing guns should not be trivialised, it can even land in the hands of the "communists" who according to certain authorities are still active.
One more thing Zahid, Malaysiakini does not spin news. If you want to know which media is the top news spinner, look for the one that has been sued a dozen of times and lost a good number of the suits. How many times has Malaysiakini been sued?
Malaysiakini does balanced reporting. If say Anwar Ibrahim makes a serious allegation against you and it is published by Malaysiakini, you will be given a chance to explain your side of the story which will be printed too.
Your mainstream media which report all condemnations against the opposition when it is not doing the condemning itself, does it ever give the person so condemned a chance to rebut the accusations?
Fire_rock: Zahid, 44 weapons lost at sea is a bit too far-fetched for ordinary Malaysians to believe. I would accept the loss of weapons in a hostile environment where the police suffered casualties and weapons were seized.
An example would be the situation in Semporna, Sabah where our police officers were ambushed. Loss of weapons would then be acceptable.
Black Mamba: Zahid doesn't trust Malaysiakini, but neither do the readers trust him nor the Home Ministry. They are the great spin masters, giving excuses from guns dropping into the sea to "carelessness and mistakes made in the line of duty".
Sarajun Hoda: He doesn't trust Malaysiakini? He is alone in this, or okay, maybe along with a few dozen more from Umno. But does he know how many people do not trust him? Tens of millions! How about that?
Lee Huang: Keep up the good work, Malaysiakini. It's in your job description to scrutinise the government and keep them on their toes over issues like this. The minister is simply reacting on gut instinct to defend himself as he is not used to being asked difficult questions.
Magnus: What an amazing display of killer public communications skills by Zahid!
I bet those at consulting firm McKinsey and Company are salivating like Pavlov's dog for some of those awesome personal skills.
Taxpayers have every right to hound Zahid on lost guns
