YOURSAY Whether it was RM600,000 or RM6 million, where did Ali Rustam get the funds? Did he burn his entire life savings?
My son's wedding wasn't extravagant, says CM
MfM: Let me see here. According Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam's special secretary, caterers and other businesses provided their services for "free".
As a CM, Ali Rustam cannot accept such a gift as it can be considered as a bribe. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), of course, cannot act because of the "archaic law" that protects the "state leaders".
RM600,000 for a wedding is already extremely ludicrous. Weddings typically already cost around RM100,000 (typical lower middle-class wedding). In the case of the son of the CM of Malacca, the catering alone cost six times more.
Now if Malaysians want to see a RM6 million wedding, don't worry, our Dear Beloved Leader Najib Razak shall have one for his Dear Daughter if we allow him to continue to be PM.
LittleGiant: It is strange that BN politicians can spend hundreds of thousands ringgit and even close to a million ringgit on family events and yet have the audacity to say that it was "not extravagant".
And they go around "preaching" to the people all over the country how "not to be extravagant" in their expenses. May be this is BN's style of demonstrating its "leadership by example".
At this rate, some BN politicians could host 'super-mega family events' and compete among themselves to even get into the Guinness Book of World Records. After all, isn't that what Malaysia needs as 'top priority' to achieve 'fully developed nation' status by 2020?
And the same bunch of BN politicians would not hesitate to hound an opposition politician who probably would spend only one-tenth of RM600,000 for his or her son's or daughter's wedding.
And BN would not waste time to call in MACC to do a "thorough investigation" as to how the opposition politician spent "peanuts" for his or her family event.
Yap CS: Ali's special secretary MS Mahadevan said: "500 people had volunteered while many of the caterers and other businesses provided their services for free."
Go on, pull my other leg, it's got bells on it.
Gerard Lourdesamy: Whether it was RM600,000 or RM6 million, where did he get the funds? Did he burn his entire life savings?
All these sponsors offering their services for free: what did they get in return from him and the state government? The fact that they sponsored the event because he is the CM, doesn't that qualify for an investigation by the MACC?
A souvenir book for a private wedding - that must be a record by itself. This was not a state or national event, so why need a souvenir book? Even the British royal wedding last year did not have a souvenir book with the names of sponsors.
The people who attended this event were probably the usual "freebie" crowd who think that as long as they get fed and entertained in a one-off extravaganza, Ali Rustam must be a "great" leader. No wonder, Umno has succeeded in hoodwinking the Malays for the last 55 years.
Disbeliever: Mr Malacca CM, you said the wedding was "cheap to organise". Of course, it was because money is not an issue with you as you would have accumulated wealth easily (In fact, almost all Umno-BN politicians do that - look at former Selangor MB Mohd Khir Toyo and Sarawak CM Abdul Taib Mahmud, for example).
The point is your No 1 boss, the PM, has advised the rakyat to be prudent and there you go throwing money as if it grows on trees.
We, the rakyat, are not jealous of your wealth if it is earned honestly and legally but you know that most, if not all, Umno-BN politicians are involved in some kind of shady deals.
Not too long ago, I heard from the grapevine that you are known as the 10 percent CM. Perhaps this is how you accumulated your wealth? I don't know. If it is true, then you will have to face your maker on Judgment Day.
Ksn: If RM600,000 is cheap for a wedding dinner, I wonder what is considered an expensive dinner by Umno leaders' standards.
Quigonbond: BN leaders are toppling over each other to make the most sensational statement of the day.
We just had "women have their rights from the start" . Now, hot on its heels, an "inexpensive" RM600,000 wedding (which by the way, the bill appears to be footed by state agencies aka taxpayers' money).
I certainly call upon all Malaccans to vote BN back to power for another five-year term of plundering and abuse of power. You get the leader you truly deserve.
Baiyuensheng: If going by statistics, where 90 percent of the population do not pay taxes - the cheap wedding costing RM600,000 does sound extravagant.
This amount would even put a majority of the 10 percent taxpayers to shame.
