I am dismayed by Helen Ang's assertion that Jamaah Islah Malaysia (JIM) is a 'proselytising' body funded by the government of Malaysia. Quoting her statement , "the state pumping the wind behind their sails", I wish to alert Malaysiakini that JIM's social activities have never involved government's coffers funded by taxpayers.
As a responsible NGO, JIM's main agenda is not to 'proselytise' non-Muslims, but to positively reform the society based on universal Islamic principles. JIM's modus operandi is different from the typical evangelist movements in western countries which are seen as proselytising bodies by non-evangelists.
JIM's effort in public opinion leadership goes beyond the scope of religious rituals stereotyped by many skeptics of Islamic movements. Some of the active members are together with other civil societies in securing the spirit of justice in Islam through (poll watchdog) Mafrel and (anti-ISA movement) GMI.
The volunteer work done by its members are always guided by the Malaysian constitution.
