LETTER | US risking World War III with its Greenland aspirations

LETTER | The Association for Welfare, Community and Dialogue is concerned about US President Donald Trump's desire to take over Greenland for “world peace,” as he doubled down on his ambitions to annex the strategically placed, resource-rich Danish territory.

Greenland is located between the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans, northeast of Canada and northwest of Iceland.

The territory comprises the island of Greenland, the largest island in the world and more than a hundred other smaller islands.

Although part of the North American continent, geopolitically, the island is part of Europe. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark but has wide-ranging autonomy, which was extended in 2009.

The US President seems to use peace and international security as a reason to take over Greenland, but the real reason is to plunder its natural resources to feed the US’ industry needs.

This is in addition containing China and Russia, which it perceives as a strategic threat around the continent.

After all, Trump is only interested in making America great again, and his so-called international peace and security reasoning is nothing more than a camouflage.

Insecurity

Currently, in the context of the Ukraine -Russia war and the demand that Europe takes care of its own security, with larger defence spending, the US is basically planting the “seeds” for World War III by trying to annex Greenland, which reinforces the insecurity of European nations.

History has shown that insecurity is the very reason nations go to war to preserve their interest.

Furthermore, ignoring the aspirations of the indigenous people of Greenland would certainly violate international norms.

Therefore, we urge the US to work for genuine peace by enhancing diplomacy and building trust among the international community, which would ultimately guarantee its own security.

Annexing an autonomous territory for self-seeking gains is not the way forward but a prelude to war.
