LETTER | The Malaysian Indian People Party (MIPP) calls upon the federal government to consider declaring Thaipusam as Indian Heritage Month.
Thaipusam is not just a religious festival but also a cultural cornerstone for the Indian community in Malaysia.
Its vibrant rituals, unique traditions, and the unity it fosters are deeply rooted in our nation’s multicultural identity.
By recognising Thaipusam as Indian Heritage Month, we can:
Raise cultural awareness: Enhance understanding and appreciation of Indian heritage among all Malaysians, fostering national unity.
Boost tourism and economy: Promote Thaipusam and Indian culture as global attractions for local and international tourists, driving economic growth.
Preserve heritage: Showcase the rich history of the Indian community through exhibitions, performances, and educational campaigns in major temples like BatuMalai Batu Caves, Kallumalai Ipoh, Thannimalai Penang; ensuring its legacy is preserved for future generations.
We propose that Indian Heritage Month includes:
Public awareness campaigns to educate Malaysians about the significance of Thaipusam and Indian heritage.
Cultural events and performances in key states, especially during Thaipusam.
International promotions to attract tourists to Malaysia as a hub of cultural diversity.
As we celebrate Thaipusam in unity, we urge the government to take this progressive step to honour and elevate the Indian community’s contributions to Malaysia’s rich cultural tapestry.
Such an initiative will not only strengthen inclusivity but also position Malaysia as a global model of cultural harmony.
May the blessings of Lord Murugan bring prosperity, unity, and happiness to all. Let us work together to celebrate diversity and create a more inclusive Malaysia.
