LETTER | Radio language is designed to be efficient and easy to understand. Radio deejays must not use the wrong choice of words on air. Be precise and don't beat around the bush. Communicate clearly and concisely in situations where time is crucial.
Minnal FM is currently running a Deepavali campaign. The DJs frequently say "Manasa Mattum Inikattum" which means " Keep Your Heart Sweet". This is repeated at least 50- 70 times a day on air.
The DJs tell listeners to avoid sugar but to keep their hearts sweet? How would one keep his or her heart sweet? The right choice of word is “Keep Your Heart Warm" in Tamil and it should be “Manasa Magilchiya Vecchikunga" or " Manasa Santhoshama Vacchikunga".
Please stop the mockery, Minnal FM. You are a government radio station. Don't make yourself foolish or worthless. At times the deejays engage in trivial or silly chatter, especially during the morning shows.
Minnal FM Tamil station presenters during the morning belt talk show keep talking and talking, sometimes for five to six minutes non-stop on air without realising that the listeners are irritated. Remember that the listeners are intelligent.
A radio DJ is a versatile role involving music, entertainment, presentation, commentary, and news updates. They must specialise in a particular genre or topic and must be able to adapt well to live broadcast situations.
