LETTER | The Malaysian Bar reiterates the urgent need for the introduction and enactment of National Harmony Bills.
It is imperative that Malaysia embraces laws that promote unity, stability, and maturity, which are essential for the country’s economic enrichment and social cohesion.
The Federal Constitution is the supreme law of Malaysia, designed to safeguard the rights and freedoms of all Malaysians. Selective interpretation of the Constitution undermines its integrity and the principles of justice it upholds.
It is a travesty to allow such practices to continue without addressing the root causes of discord and division within our society.
National Harmony Bills are crucial in this regard. These laws would provide a robust legal framework to address issues of racial, religious, and social intolerance. They would ensure that hate speech and discrimination are effectively curtailed, fostering a more inclusive and harmonious Malaysia.
Furthermore, the National Unity Ministry must take a proactive role in this endeavour. It is essential that the ministry initiates a comprehensive consultation process involving all stakeholders, including civil society, legal experts, community leaders, and the public.
Such a process will ensure that the legislation is well-informed, balanced, and reflective of the diverse perspectives within our nation.
Unity is not merely a lofty ideal but a practical necessity for Malaysia’s progress. A united Malaysia is better positioned to achieve greater heights in terms of stability, economic growth, and international reputation. When our citizens feel respected and valued, they are more likely to contribute positively to the nation’s development.
The Malaysian Bar calls on the National Unity Ministry to prioritise the consultation process and work diligently towards the enactment of National Harmony Bills. Together, we can build a Malaysia that is not only prosperous but also just, inclusive and united.
