I refer to the letter Education system should use one language .
K Narayanasamy seems to hark on the issue of having English once again to be part of the medium of instruction for certain subjects, and how not doing so would erode national unity.
It is frustrating to see myopic nationalists like these continue to make probably politically correct loud noises that are easily consumed by the simple and communal minded. Nonetheless they are foolish ideals that ultimately will hold back the development of the country as a whole.
Put it simply, Bahasa Malaysia is not a world language, and it never will be. Don't get me wrong - see it in the same light as Swedish, it too will never be a world language. But it will continue to be spoken proudly by Swedes. The thing is, almost all Swedes have no problem switching between doing business and getting knowledge in Swedish or English. And most Swedes don't even like British or American culture.
The result is one of the most developed nations in the world with almost every Swede having some sort of international contact or business. Bring that closer to home and look at Singapore, our reluctant ex-relative.
Now how shallow it is to want to force your citizens to learn a language that will hamper their ability to produce economic benefit for the country? It took a very long and powerful prime minister to reverse that fatal decision that everything be taught in BM, which ultimately produced two generations of an uncompetitive workforce who can't converse internationally.
Not only that, our politicians are now arguing over what to call this language! By all means, learn BM, but don't be a foolish village head to deny your villagers the weapons to survive, just because the weapons were not made in your village.
