LETTER | An alliance of sworn foes - Marital bliss or total disaster?

LETTER | It was rather amusing to read the blog posting by DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang recently. In his post, Lim takes the Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu to task, claiming he had used lies, falsehoods, and fake news to deceive the people.

As an avid political observer, I must say this is a sad case of the "pot calling the kettle black".

Lim should take a look in his own backyard before hurling such serious allegations against another politician.

Even in reality, if a man is married to a woman for so many years and then decides to divorce her, it is only humanely correct that he waits for a certain period of time for the dust to settle before getting hitched again.

The same principle would apply to politics. The DAP has been known for years as an opposing force in Malaysian politics and its number one nemesis has been BN, namely Umno.

It was been the opposition's political agenda for years, or even decades, to dethrone BN and after a long battle, the opposition tasted success.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad

However, the sentiments among many voters back in 2018, including myself, were for Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to be named the prime minister.

Unfortunately, this was not the case and they opted instead for Mahathir, who for years has been a key figure in Umno.

Obviously, he had something up his sleeves when he accepted the position and soon his colours began showing when he, on numerous occasions, refused to name a date for Anwar Ibrahim to take over.

We gather that he then came up with this great plan where he would resign and then come back in blazing glory as the "people want him so badly".

This great plan backfired and that is when Muhyiddin Yassin stepped up to take responsibility.

Now, once again the DAP and PKR find themselves in the administration, and with dangerous partners who were once their sworn enemies.

As in the case of the divorce mentioned earlier, we, the voters are rather puzzled and disillusioned over this sudden marriage.

It has been drummed into our minds for years to oppose Umno and now suddenly, we are being asked by the DAP to support Umno leaders in the coming state polls.

Umno has for years been associated with abuse of power, cronyism, and alleged corrupt practices. These issues have been repeatedly highlighted by DAP and PKR at all their ceramah and Lim is among those who spoke out strongly against Umno.

As a voter, the perception I gather now is that certain political parties are willing to sell their souls and go to bed with demons just to realise their ambitions.

Is being in power at the expense of your integrity and credibility worth it? You have to ask yourself, do the voters really respect you?

Muhyiddin Yassin

Comparatively, Muhyiddin commands more respect as back in 2015, he was among the first to question Najib Abdul Razak over the 1MDB scandal.

Back then, Najib removed both Muhyiddin and Abdul Gani Patail as they were bold enough to stand up against him. Had Muhyiddin at that time been greedy for power, he would have just played along with Najib and enjoyed the "additional perks".

It is left to be seen how this new "matrimony" between DAP, PKR, and Umno will end up - either in marital bliss or in total disaster.
