LETTER | Learning about Tangaraju Suppiah's upcoming execution (scheduled for April 26) has brought me great sorrow.

His family must be experiencing immense pain and sadness now, and we empathise with them as we were in the same situation as well back in 2019.

My heart goes out to them during this challenging period. It is essential to remind Singapore that every individual possesses worth and dignity, and their life has meaning and value.

The act of hanging is a brutal and archaic method of taking a human life, and it has no place in a civilised society. Not only is hanging cruel and painful, but it also conveys the message that violence is an acceptable way to address wrongdoing.

This adamancy has caused much distress. This news has affected Singaporeans, Malaysians and all of us worldwide. It's heart-wrenching to think about Tangaraju's final week. It's miserable to lose one's life just because of 1kg of cannabis in the 21st century.

Thangaraju was questioned without a lawyer or interpreter, a trend and a tell-tale sign in Singapore for hanging someone.

Singapore must find a better way to address punishment without involving violence and death, as it sends the wrong message.

It is a heartless move to pull human rights lawyer M Ravi's licence and ban him from doing his noble job. He is the only representative who will stand for death row inmates and their families in times of emergency. Taking away Ravi's licence is a callous and desperate way to take human lives by denying support to those in need.

Stop the execution!
