LETTER | Are there Malaysians believing that certain categories of people in the country cannot be charged in court?

If indeed they are charged, they cannot be found guilty. If they are found guilty, they should be pardoned immediately. And, if they are not pardoned immediately, the government of the day must be replaced.

As far as I understand, the government of the day is entrusted with making new policies, legislating new laws and enforcing existing ones. It is new to me that a new government can overturn guilty verdicts or discontinue prosecution proceedings already in progress in court or pardon someone unjustifiably. What sort of government would that be?

The clarion call now is to hold the general election to change the government of the day. The implied message is the new government, if elected, will be able to overturn the guilty verdicts, discontinue the prosecution proceedings or selectively pardon some already found guilty.

There is now a political party which openly declares that it will do so if elected to power. I will not be surprised if this objective is included in its election manifesto.

The burden now is on the people. If this party wins the majority and forms the next government, it is Malaysians in general who are making a stand and sending a message to the world.

The message is we Malaysians do not believe in justice. We do not trust the court to deliver a fair verdict. We believe, and in fact, we want some people to be above the law. We believe some people cannot be found guilty even though they are charged in court with evidence. We believe pardons should be selectively and coercively given to certain people.

If the majority of Malaysians hold on to this belief, what future can we envisage for ourselves and our children? Our leaders can carry on robbing this country blind. Our leaders can continue engaging in endless grandeurs while we live in misery, with our standard of living declining rather than improving.

And when our leaders are convicted for corruption and abuse of power, instead of feeling relieved and liberated, we protest and petition for their release.

If we truly believe in all this baloney, we truly deserve to be in the rut. Don’t look for sympathy, for no one would help a nation so perverse in its moral fortitude.
