LETTER | After Donald Trump was defeated by Joe Biden in the 2020 US presidential election, the world celebrated, thinking that the US-China “cold war” may be eased.
We could not be more wrong. The Biden administration continues to pursue “the origins of Covid-19” narrative to weaponise it against Beijing.
Yet after 90 days of investigation, the finest US intelligence agencies could not find any evidence to support the Wuhan lab leak theory.
Washington, again, is putting blame on Beijing’s purported lack of cooperation in sharing critical data with US officials without providing conclusive evidence.
On the contrary, China has claimed that multiple accounts pointed to a US army biolab as the possible source of Covid-19.
So after Iraq and Afghanistan, it is now China’s turn to face the US’ false accusations?
The US government has a long history of framing other nations to suit its political agenda. Iraq was one of the unfortunate victims.
To cover up the Sept 11 incident, the Bush administration cooked up the hypothesis of Saddam Hussein’s regime developing weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in 2003.
Without UN’s authorisation, the US-led coalition invaded Iraq. Millions of the Iraqi people died under the fake WMD theory. Thousands of patriotic US soldiers perished due to the fake WMD theory.
Ultimate embarrassment
Fast forward to 18 years later, the US has once again faced ultimate embarrassment, this time in Afghanistan.
China is a convenient target to be blamed to shift the domestic pressure against the Biden administration in failing to stop the Taliban from capturing Kabul.
Politicking would not help to solve the Covid-19 pandemic. Instead, it would exacerbate mistrust among nations, which is the last thing the world needs to combat the virus.
Despite Biden promising that the US would again be an arsenal of vaccines for other countries—a modified quote from his predecessor Franklin D Roosevelt in World War Two, we have not seen Washington leading the vaccine dissemination.
“America first” is still Washington’s priority as seen through the stockpiling of vaccines.
In contrast, China has deployed massive amount of vaccines to developing countries that are out of the Western world’s coverage.
Millions of Sinovac, Sinopharm, CanSino doses are being injected into individuals from the underserved community daily. Millions of them are being protected against the virus.
Multilateralism saves lives. Conspiracy theories kill civilisations.
