LETTER | Laws and processes aside, traditions cannot be trampled upon

LETTER | Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s persistent and lengthy rebuttal in defence of what he and his government committed that is now fast fuelling a potential Constitutional crisis remains the subject of political analysts, protagonists and antagonists.

The laws and the process relating to the revocation of the Emergency Ordinances are gaining centre stage traction among politicians as political expediency is being bolstered or rammed by Muhyiddin's crew members and the opposition, respectively.

While the Federal Constitution is the foundation for the Rule of Law that erects nationhood, we must not forget a vital cornerstone.

And that crucial cornerstone is the long-held and jealously safeguarded tradition among Malaysians.

Our unwritten tradition of high regard for the Royal Institution plays a defining role in making Malaysia unique and purposeful. It gives a striking balance to the Federal Constitution that makes Malaysia a democracy.

What Munyiddin and his supporters must come to terms with is the fact that laws and processes alone cannot justify the hurt already hurled on the psychosis of the nation.

What Queen Elizabeth is to the Brits, the Constitutional Monarchy and our Malaysian-styled Royal institutions are the souls of its 32 million citizens. Like it or hate it, you got to have it.

Today as cries of "biadab" (rude) and "derhaka" (treasonous) ring throughout the nation, from cities to townships to the remote, humble villages far and near, our politicians must know that this tradition of respect for the Rulers and the Agong cannot be trampled upon no matter whatever legal and due process justifications are drummed up.

This unwritten tradition is what holds the multiracial, multi-religious and multicultural fabric of a society that has evolved these past 400 years to call this land their home.

The longer Muhyiddin’s government fights tooth and nail, the higher the price this nation will pay for law and order. That is the painful truth as an entire nation reel in hurt pain over the desecration of this real tradition that weaves our society together.

Hopefully analysts, protagonists and antagonists alike, will be mindful of the power of the soul of this nation, our Royal institution that is being cradled in the bosom of all patriotic citizens.
