LETTER | Between the economy and the resurgence of Covid-19, I would prefer that the authorities take control of coronavirus pandemic first.
I know many are unemployed and many businesses are adversely affected, but I think the choice is clear. The control over the spread of this virus must take precedence over the economy. Prematurely opening up travels and contacts will only cause us more pain. We must seriously take control of the situation before it gets out of hand.
Unless an effective vaccine is found, what choice do people have, other than remaining vigilant and observing the standard operating procedures strictly?
I really hope the Ministry of Health and other enforcing authorities will not compromise on or slacken the enforcement over time.
On reflection, the recent Sabah state election was really unnecessary bunkum we created for ourselves. What purpose did it serve, other than allowing another group of people to ride the gravy train?
Initially, we controlled the Covid-19 well because the authorities tolerated no nonsense and the people were generally cooperating and observing the rules.
But what about now? We have so many going to and coming back from Sabah. During the election campaign, they were allowed to mingle, talk and gather. Now, they are back to their respective towns and villages around the country. May I know how strictly the authorities have been monitoring and quarantining them?
We have also opened our schools. Have we thought about what if some students in these schools are Covid-19 positive? We remember how a cluster in Sri Petaling cost us earlier, did we not?
I am not an alarmist. But I believe we must anticipate and take pre-emptive measures before the problem becomes acute. If needed, the government must continue providing assistance and loan moratorium to those whose livelihood are adversely affected by the movement control. We can’t do things halfway because it will eventually cost us more.
Our authorities have done well in the past. But, going forward, I am not sure. It looks like everyone is relaxing now, as if the problem is over.
