This letter of appeal hopefully will be read and also reach the hearts of millions of women in Malaysia who could be mothers, wives, sisters, grandmothers. The harsh injustice thrown at Bersih’s chairperson, Madam Maria Chin Abdullah, is your concern, too, and that unique responsibility also falls on your shoulders to rise in defence of a nation that must respect and honor the women of this country.
Yes, ladies, mothers, wives, sisters and grandmothers, you have what it takes to stand up for Maria. You do not need politicians to show you the way. You do not need a leader amongst you to rise and lead.
Creation has blessed you with that ability to rise against the odds and stand tall with virtue when driven to the edge.
Dear Malaysian ladies, you must not divorce yourself from what has happened to Maria. You know the entire story. Will you stand up and speak up for another one of your fellow sisters who only wanted a brighter future for your children, your husbands, your brothers and every male citizen and all of you, too?
Why must the country’s harshest laws be slammed upon a woman citizen who carried no grenades nor raised armed terrorists and suicide killers?
Why must one of your own member of the fairer sex be subjected to such gruelling, mind-exploding solitary confinement for 28 long and torturing days before she can be brought to court to witness justice at work?
Suppose this soul buckled, how will you as a fellow woman relate with or face the consequences?
Our Malaysian women must rise to the occasion. Do what is right, peaceful and yet most powerful. You need no politician to lead you. You all have what it takes to finally drive some sense back it this most needed hour of our nation’s perilous pains.
Yes please. You can. You must. And all for the love of one of your own species. In doing it for Maria you have done it for all women. And in fact you would have done it for all of us male and female citizens here and those who are yet to be born.
