I refer to the letter The world rallies to help Muslim Aceh by Frank Malaysian. I am in total agreement with the writer's sentiment. The tsunami tragedy has broken through all racial, religious and national boundaries.
However, the writer seems to have neglected one group of human beings that has been doing their human duty to help whatever they can. By this, I mean the Jewish people all over the world.
For example, the Israeli government has sent a 82-ton planeload of relief supplies, including medicine, water, food, blankets, tents, nylon sheeting and electric generators to Sri Lanka. It also contained 10,000 blankets, 3,680 liters of mineral water, 12 tons of food, 17.5 tons of baby food, and over nine tons of medicine.
Assistance of a similar nature has also been send to Thailand. There are also efforts by Israeli citizens to raise more funds to help their fellow human beings in Asia.
In the UK, the United Synagogue, the Reform Synagogues of Great Britain and Liberal Judaism are among those to have already backed the World Jewish Aid initiative, which hopes to raise more than 100,000 (RM700,000) for the tsunami victims. Within hours of the launch of the appeal yesterday, a single donation of 5,000 (RM35,000) was received.
In the United States, for example, the Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado is continuing to accept online and telephone donations for the Southeast Asia tsunami relief efforts, which will be forwarded to its overseas relief partner agency, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC).
The JDC will filter the funds to local relief groups to provide emergency supplies on the ground and part of the funds will certainly reach Aceh where the suffering is the greatest.
These are just few of the examples of how the Jewish people all over the world share the suffering of their fellow human beings in Asia.
