Johor Police chief Musa Hassan is one the 'shining stars' of the Royal Malaysian Police today. In fact, he became an overnight star after playing a major role in throwing former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim into a 15-year jail term five years ago.

Thank god, I am not one those Malays who easily forgets things, or ' Melayu muda lupa ' as claimed by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Musa has contributed significantly to the downfall of Mahathir's key political rival with his affidavits that shocked the world.

Certainly, it takes a 'genius' to come up with such 'convincing' allegations against Anwar, which among others involved homosexual acts with his former speechwriter, Dr Munawar Anees, a Pakistani intellectual.

In the wake of government cheque scam which made headline news in all major newspapers in the last few days, Musa appeared on the front page of the Malay Mail . His photo looked as if he was boggled as to whether the prime suspect in the case, Syed Ismail Syed Alwi, is the son of his former Special Branch chief.

He told the Malay Mail that he had asked his counterparts in Penang whether the fugitive who cheated the government for RM6 million is the son of Syed Alwi, who is no stranger to him. And this, to quote his words, "was just to satisfy my curiosity".

Nothing more than just satisfying curiosity? What if the suspect really is the son of Syed Alwi Syed Hamid?

The former SB chief may be not around as he is on retirement leave at the moment, but does it mean that the police will not be getting any information from him despite the urgency of the case?

After all, we live in the wireless communication age, which enables even any layperson to be contacted from every corner of the world.

And of course, Syed Alwi would understand if he ever got contacted, as he is in the position to " membantu siasatan polis " (to assist in police investigation). He himself retired from the force with a very high rank and he should know better. Aren't the masses are frequently told to "membantu polis " at all times?

If Musa's suspicion turns out to be true, Malaysia will see another sad episode, really. This is because Syed Ismail has been on the police 'wanted list' for quite some time; it is therefore totally illogical if Syed Alwi does not have the slightest idea about his son's activities and whereabouts.

Furthermore, everyone knows the SB has been behind the successful solving of many high profile criminal cases, as well as arrests under Internal Security Act, which have become too frequent lately.

It crosses my mind that we may actually be watching a storyline which can easily beat any box-office Hindi movie involving corrupt practices in the police force.
