From Our Readers

Some have finally identified that the flawed structural policies of colonialism (such as ‘indirect rule’ and ‘divide and rule’) created the political ‘wrongs’ we face today. Therefore we have to be mature and competent enough to institute reforms to share and wield power to correct these wrongs.

But it is insufficient for the proposed reforms to be based merely on ‘maturity and competence’. Emphasis needs to be given to projecting overarching desired values that permeate the entire institutional fabric from both the ‘top-bottom and bottom-top’ dimensions.

Indeed, while it is clear that macro reforms such as the doctrine of separation of powers calls for priority attention, reforms for the democratisation of social institutions at the grassroots level and across the board should also equally be given priority and urgent attention.

Finally, analysis on contemporary political dilemmas has, regrettably since independence, been nothing more than ad hoc practical compromises without ideology.

It needs to be understood that social change must necessarily be generated from the grassroots level because this is where the politically powerless, under-class, low income and poverty stricken groups are forced to face the reality.

That is the reality of fighting an entrenched elitist class-based ethnic/ racial society which is determined to maintain the status quo.

It seems essential therefore that a left of centre ideology should oversee reforms.

I would argue that a defining and timely analysis should be further developed in the writing of a book to prepare the electorate for the next general election.
