The statistics relating to drug-related crimes as reported in The Sun (Jan 7) is certainly an eye-opener.
That, however, is only the 'tip of the iceberg'. The federal narcotics police should undertake further investigations into the link between drug abusers to specific crimes.
In fact, nearly three years ago, a few of us approached the police to come up with profiles of drug abusers accused of committing specific crimes, such as murder, the rape of children and young persons.
Unfortunately, such information could not be released on the grounds that their cases were pending before the courts. The police promised to collate the data on our behalf.
Regrettably, this did not happen.
It is, therefore, most timely that the police now follow-up and proceed in this direction.
As is well known, the availability of such profiles will provide valid and reliable socio-economic background data that could identify causal root factors which, in turn, could be useful in seeking solutions.
