I refer to the Malaysiakini report Gates of 'racism' slam shut on Chin Peng's return .
It is correct, appropriate and most encouraging for Dr Mahathir Mohamad reportedly to have said, that ‘Chin Peng can return if there is public support’ and that it only ‘Needs to be clarified to the people just (to) say there was an agreement’.
But with the greatest respect, this means that the public now only needs to reaffirm the support they gave to the Peace Agreement that Mahathir as the then prime minister initiated, orchestrated and implemented exactly 20 years ago.
It is not difficult to clarify this in the unequivocal historical detailed account of the peace process leading to the agreement in my book ‘The Finest Hour: Malaysian-MCP Peace Accord in Perspective’.
Her Mahathir himself graciously contributed a spectacular foreword stating that ‘no other country has managed to deal with guerilla insurrection as successfully as Malaysia. It took a long time but finally the MCP agreed to lay down arms. It was a great moment for Malaysia when they did’.
The public needs to be reminded, once and for all, that all this became a reality only with the signing of the Peace Agreement.
In his conclusion, Mahathir finally humbly acknowledges that ‘The MCP laid down arms when I was prime minister of Malaysia. I leave it to readers (Malaysians) to evaluate the significance of this’
I believe that the significance must surely be the unequivocal acknowledgment that there was an agreement that must now be once again fully endorsed and supported by the public.
