Several high-profile court cases linked to “political donations” have raised calls by civil society for laws on political funding. Political donations are the contribution of funds to a political activity, political party, or candidate. Currently, there are no laws in the country to regulate and monitor political funds, only besides the limits on campaign spending by candidates. The lack of law and regulations in political fundings have caused the walls of this law to be loopholed for corruption.
The amendment of political financing law was planned to be tabled in parliament sitting in the October to November’s term, but due to the recent announcement of dissolution of Parliament, this topic has yet to be discussed.
The 4th session of Malaysiakini’s Youth Parliamentary Debathon is going to involve youths aged between 16 - 25 years old to role play as member of parliament to discuss on this pertaining issue and provide suggestions on improvising the current political financing law which can be brought as guidances to the new MPs for parliament sittings in the next term.
