Data Driven Journalism (with HELP University)
Location
Malaysiakini, PJ
Event Date
21 March 2020

Overview

In our increasingly data-driven world, visualisations are becoming a mainstream story form rather than just a complement to news. The most effective stories are often interactive, visually compelling, and provide deep insight through data.

It is now a must for one to know how to obtain, clean and analyse the growing archive of digitised information as audiences seek information that is simple and easily understood.

This course will focus on putting news into context by simply using data to inform and assist journalistic work without any coding requirements.

Participants also have an option this March, to sign up for a joint certificate 6-day course in collaboration with HELP University’s Faculty of Communications.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand what data journalism is and how it works on a busy news desk
  • Use spreadsheets and basic statistics to find patterns in data that will reveal story ideas and add evidence
  • Transform data into stories, infographics and interactive visualisations
  • Use the best practices and the principles of graphic design to assist journalistic work

What you will learn:

  • Introduction to Data Journalism
  • What Makes A Good Data Story
  • How to Collect, Clean, and Analyse Data
  • Telling Stories With Visualisations
  • How to Create Data Stories With Impact
  • How to Manage Your Data Journalism Project
