The 5th episode of the "Youth Parliamentary Debathon" will focus on the question, Should Malaysia Ban Fast Fashion?. Aimed at young individuals aged 16-25, this event offers a platform for informed discussions, empowering the voices of the next generation to tackle one of the most pressing issues in the fashion industry today.

Scheduled to take place in Dewan Pembangunan Siswa, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Pulau Pinang, the debate will feature youth representatives from across Malaysia aged 16-25, who will delve into the environmental and social implications of banning fast fashion. As the global conversation on sustainability intensifies, this debate provides a vital opportunity for young Malaysians to explore whether a ban on fast fashion would benefit the country’s economy, environment, and social well-being.

The event will begin with youth participants presenting their arguments, followed by politicians weighing in on whether Malaysia should introduce a ban on fast fashion.

How other countries are tackling this issue

France: implemented strict regulations against fast fashion, including the Anti-Waste Law for a Circular Economy, which imposes penalties on companies producing unsustainable clothing. This law aims to reduce waste by encouraging recycling and responsible consumerism.

Sweden: promotes sustainable fashion by offering tax breaks for repair services on clothes. This has shifted consumer behavior towards buying longer-lasting, high-quality garments while reducing the environmental impact of fast fashion.

The Netherlands: introduced initiatives to regulate the textile industry by incentivizing sustainable practices among manufacturers and consumers. These initiatives include a proposed law requiring companies to report the environmental and social impact of their products.

This creates a potential discussion on Malaysia’s readiness to adopt a fast fashion ban policy and its feasibility of implementing it plus the impact of it on our economy.

The "Youth Parliamentary Debathon" aims to promote critical thinking, informed decision-making, and active participation in the democratic process. Additionally, the debate allows youth participants to showcase their critical thinking and public speaking skills while engaging with policy experts.
