After a transformative journey spanning 21 months, the ILO Young Futuremakers Malaysia programme has drawn to a close, marking an inspiring endeavour.

Throughout its duration, this initiative has served as a beacon of opportunity for over 8000 Malaysian youth, providing them with invaluable skills and resources to thrive in the dynamic landscape of the food services sector.

Apart from reflecting on the project’s success, the ceremony also had a panel discussion focused on the future of youth employability in Malaysia's F&B industry.

The Role of TVET Training in F&B Industry Growth

Sanjay Boss, CJ Academy’s manager, showcased three maps highlighting career enhancement opportunities for those working in restaurants, bakeries, and as baristas.

“When mapping out your career path, it is important to understand the potential career advancement within a field and how practical experience gained through technical and vocational education and training (TVET) can greatly boost your professional development”.

“One of the key benefits of TVET training in the F&B industry is its practical approach. Rather than relying solely on theoretical knowledge, learners engage in real-world scenarios and simulations, allowing them to develop proficiency through experience,” said Sanjay Boss, Organisation Manager of CJ Academy.

As the Food Service Industry Evolves, so do Career Opportunities

The 'Young FutureMakers Malaysia Career Progression Map' is designed to adapt to shifting industry trends and innovations, ensuring that employees remain equipped with the necessary skills to excel in emerging roles.

The bilingual map (Bahasa Malaysia and English) provides a thorough breakdown of the essential qualifications, technical abilities, and core competencies required for different job levels across various industries, specifically those in restaurants, bakery and barista.

Why Soft Skills Are More Important Than You Think for Your Journey in the Food Industry?

“The food industry is a highly competitive space, and those aiming to make it to the top must possess more than just technical skills. Employers value individuals who possess strong communication abilities, excel in teamwork, and demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Interestingly, these skills are often overlooked in traditional educational approaches. Depending on your level of seniority in any role, leadership or management may also be a key soft skill to include if you decide to apply for a position that requires managing a team and supporting junior members of staff,” said Farah Sooji, Youth Entrepreneur, Founder of SoojiCakes.

Building a Future in Malaysia's F&B Industry

Gayathri Vadivel, Head of Employment Services Department, Employment Insurance Office of Social Security Organization Malaysia said “Consumer tastes and lifestyles are changing, and how we live our lives influences what, how and where we consume our meals and drinks. In fact, diners today are interested in new experiences at the restaurants they visit, from innovative products to great ambience. If more F&B sectors are able to deliver these services, not only will it attract consumers, it will also gain the interest of the youths to explore with these establishments, contributing to a vibrant food and beverage scene in Malaysia.

Through a multifaceted approach encompassing roadshows, knowledge-sharing sessions, and skills training for young workers within food service industries, the programme has overall guided youths in the sector to be more adaptable, innovative, and committed to their career growth.
