OPPO recently announced the arrival of its latest family of premium mid-range smartphone line, the OPPO Reno8 Series 5G. Marking its next move as industry players in the premium mid-range smartphone segment. The Reno8 Series 5G smartphones will be the first of OPPO’s Reno line to be powered by MariSilicon X NPU, OPPO’s self-developed imaging NPU, among other industry-leading features.
OPPO Achievements in The Mid-High Range Segment
OPPO saw robust growth in the mid-high range price segment, maintaining its position as the 4th best-selling smartphone company in the world, with a total market share of 9%. According to data from IDC, the size of OPPO’s business outside of China has surpassed its business domestically for the second consecutive year. These results demonstrate the success and continued expansion of OPPO’s business internationally. Locally, for 6 years in a row since 2016, OPPO has remained to be one of the Top 3 largest smartphone brands. Canalys reported, in Q1 this year; OPPO Malaysia ranks 2nd in the smartphone mid to high-end price segment (USD400 to USD 599) with 20% market share.
Reno series – Bridging the Gap between Mid-Range to Flagship
The OPPO Reno Series was first introduced in 2019 Q2 and has seen massive success ever since. The proof is in the numbers – over 400,000 users in the Malaysian market in just two years. The Reno Series began to focus on specific portrait functions starting from its last two generations of Reno, bringing users a one-of-a-kind imaging experience. Through the combination of algorithm and hardware, OPPO launched the bokeh flare portrait effect with DSLR texture for the first time, with the introduction of the Reno6 series. It continues to bring users top notch imaging technology and trendy designs. This marks OPPO’s shift in Reno’s direction – moving from its Selfie Expert positioning to Portrait Expert to keep up with consumer demands.
Now for the first time, the OPPO Reno8 Series 5G incorporated a flagship imaging processor – the MariSilicon X NPU– making it the most premium Reno smartphone to-date.
Ultra-clear portraits in any situation
OPPO’s first self-developed imaging NPU, MariSilicon X, provides an immense level of dedicated computing power for Reno8 Pro’s imaging features, all while consuming even less power. Built on cutting-edge 6nm process technology and industry leading DSA architecture, MariSilicon X delivers an incredible 18 trillion operations per second (18 TOPS) of dedicated image processing power. With this large computing power and high data throughput, MariSilicon X can perform lossless real-time 4K AI processing and up to 20bit HDR fusion in the RAW domain, while achieving up to 8dB signal-to-noise ratio for images. Through its ability to directly process images in the lossless RAW domain, MariSilicon X acts as an unmatched foundation for Reno8 Pro 5G’s ultimate imaging experience.
Thanks to MariSilicon X, it is also the first time that 4K video shooting has been brought to a smartphone at this price point. The 4K Ultra Night Video enables users to capture ultra-clear portrait videos at night, while 4K Ultra HDR Video optimizes portrait videos taken in the presence of strong backlight. Both features can significantly improve image quality and color expression in pictures, avoiding over-exposure in bright areas while retaining the maximum amount of detail in dark areas. Aided by the inbuilt AI-enhanced retouching algorithms, human faces appear more natural and vivid in photos and videos shot with the device.
To further optimize the shooting experience in lowlight environments, both Reno8 Pro 5G and Reno8 5G features an upgraded Dual Sony Flagship Sensors — the IMX709 for the front camera and the IMX766 for the rear camera.
Sony IMX709 is a next-generation RGBW 32MP camera sensor customized by OPPO. It ensures 60% increase for light intake and 35% improvement for noise reduction¹ when compared with traditional RGGB sensors. Together with OPPO’s self-designed Quadra Binning algorithm, every selfie will look dynamically bright and sharp no matter in lowlight or backlight scenes. Together with DOL-HDR technology embedded on the sensor, the IMX709 enables the Reno8 Pro’s front camera to easily capture high-quality, professional-looking selfies in any scenarios. Additionally, the IMX709 supports AutoFocus on the front camera for the first time, enabling 2x zoom when taking selfies. With a minimum focal distance of 15cm, it is now possible to capture super close-up shots using Reno8 Pro’s front camera, offering unprecedented detail in selfies.
On the rear camera, the Reno8 Series 5G comes with the SONY IMX766 sensor, delivering an enhanced portrait experience with its large 1/1.56-inch sensor size and features like All Pixel Omni-Directional PDAF and DOL-HDR.
With OPPO's innovative capabilities and leadership in imaging, the Reno8 Series 5G could be just one of many firsts for the brand in terms of industry-leading smartphones.
