Focus Point Holdings Berhad (“Focus Point” or “the Group”), Malaysia’s leading optical retail chain, celebrated its 35th anniversary with a grand gala dinner at One World Hotel. The event brought together distinguished guests, industry leaders, and partners to celebrate Focus Point’s remarkable journey of growth, innovation, and community impact over the past three and a half decades.
The evening was graced by the presence of Guest of Honour, Datuk Ng Yih Pyng, President of The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) and President of The Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Kuala Lumpur & Selangor (KLSCCCI). In his address, Datuk Ng commended Focus Point for its entrepreneurial spirit and outstanding achievements, noting how the Group has evolved into a trusted household name and a leader in Malaysia’s optical industry.
Advancing Vision Care and Innovation
Since its inception in 1989, Focus Point has set new benchmarks in vision care in Malaysia. The Group has embraced cutting-edge technologies, including AI-powered screenings, pioneered the 360 Advanced Primary Eye Care program, and launched initiatives like the Optical Protection Plan and Virtual Try-On, enhancing customer experience and accessibility.
Reflecting on Focus Point’s transformative journey, Dato’ Liaw Choon Liang, President & CEO of Focus Point, said: “From a single shop in Muar 35 years ago, Focus Point has grown into Malaysia’s largest optical retail chain and a public-listed entity on Main Market of Bursa Malaysia. In 1999, the Group established ExcelView Laser Eye Centre Sdn Bhd to provide private ophthalmology and optometric treatment, further strengthening its position as a holistic provider of optical and eye care solutions. Focus Point has also ventured into the Food & Beverage sector with brands such as Komugi and HAP&PI, showcasing its adaptability and entrepreneurial spirit.
A Record of Financial Excellence
During the gala, Dato’ Liaw shared Focus Point’s outstanding financial performance over the past five years. The Group’s revenue has surged above the RM250 million mark, growing by nearly 50%, from RM179 million to over RM260 million while profitability is 4 times of what it was in 2018, growing from RM7 million to RM30 million. Over the same period, the Group’s share price and market capitalization grew 10 times, reflecting strong investor confidence. (Performance figures are as of 31 December 2023.)
Dato’ Liaw expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of Focus Point’s customers, employees, franchisees, board of directors, and all other stakeholders who have believed in the Group’s vision and contributed to its growth.
To recognize the invaluable contributions of its stakeholders, Focus Point presented the Visionary Partnership Award to key strategic partners. Additionally, 30 optical stores under Focus Point were honored by several key partners with certificates of recognition for their exceptional commitment to advancing myopia management in Malaysia.
A Sustainability-Driven Future
Since 2018, Focus Point has embraced a sustainability framework guided by its 4Es Model – Education, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Empathy. This holistic approach reflects the Group’s commitment to nurturing talent, fostering growth, and creating meaningful opportunities across its value chain.
Environmental Impact: Focus Point has adopted electric vehicles and plans to install solar panels at its headquarters.
Social Contributions: Through the Focus Point Caring Hearts Charity Foundation, the Group has conducted over 26,580 free vision screenings, reaching underserved communities and promoting the importance of vision health.
Governance Standards: The Group upholds the highest standards of transparency and accountability, aligning with frameworks such as the FTSE4Good rating system.
