Batik Air has officially launched an exciting new direct service connecting Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan, further strengthening and expanding its network across East Malaysia. This latest addition complements the airline’s existing routes to Kota Kinabalu and Tawau, making it Batik Air’s third destination in Sabah.

Commencing 1 December 2024, the inaugural flight departed from Kuala Lumpur International Airport and was warmly welcomed at Sandakan Airport with traditional celebrations highlighting the cultural richness and hospitality of Sabah. Passengers arriving on the inaugural flight received traditional bead garlanding, symbolising the warm welcome and diverse heritage of the region.

The launch event was attended by distinguished guests, including Sandakan Member of Parliament, YB Puan Vivian Wong Shir Yee; Sabah Tourism Board Chief Executive Officer Julinus Jeffrey Jimit; Sandakan Municipal Council Director Of Finance and Investment, Chin Sook Vun; and Director of Tourism Malaysia Sabah, Haryanty Abu Bakar.

Known as the "Gateway to Borneo’s Wildlife", Sandakan offers easy access to renowned eco tourism attractions such as the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, and the Turtle Islands Park. Visitors can also explore Sandakan’s historical sites, including the Sandakan Memorial Park and Agnes Keith House, which offer insights into Sabah’s wartime history and colonial heritage.

Sandakan is also an economic hub in Sabah, particularly in sectors such as palm oil and aquaculture. With this new route, Batik Air aims to support not only tourism but also facilitate business travel between Sabah and West Malaysia.

Batik Air Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy, highlighted the significance of the new Kuala Lumpur–Sandakan route, stating that this addition reinforces Batik Air’s commitment to Sabah’s development by making it easier for travellers to experience the stunning landscapes and cultural heritage of East Malaysia.

“This new route is especially timely with the holiday season approaching, allowing for greater access to Sabah’s scenic destinations. It will facilitate family reunions, stimulate local tourism, and support Sandakan’s business community,” he added.

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Seri Christina Liew said Batik Air's initiative to strengthen Sabah's connectivity with West Malaysia is highly valued.

"This route provides a convenient travel option for both leisure and business travellers," she added.

Noting that domestic travellers constitute Sabah's number one source of arrivals, Liew said this route will further boost domestic arrivals while also fostering economic growth for our local communities and driving the development of our tourism industry.

Sabah Tourism Board CEO, Julinus Jeffery Jimit added “Sandakan is a fantastic family destination, offering a unique blend of wildlife, nature, heritage, and culture, making it a gem in Sabah’s tourism landscape. With this enhanced connectivity, families can easily explore Sandakan’s iconic attractions. We thank Batik Air for their partnership and look forward to continued collaboration in promoting Sabah as a premier destination for travellers from all over Malaysia and beyond.”

The Kuala Lumpur–Sandakan route will operate 14 times weekly, offering twice-daily travel options with Batik Air's Boeing 737 aircraft. Passengers can enjoy the comfort and convenience of both Economy and Business Class cabins.
