The launch of the mycology services was held at the Malaysia International Healthcare (MIH) Megatrends 2024 event organized by Ministry of Health, in collaboration with KPJ Healthcare and strategic partner Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission (MCC), with healthcare professionals, industry experts and stakeholders in attendance.
Mycology, the study of fungi, is essential for diagnosing fungal infections, which are becoming more common and can be life-threatening. Fungal diseases affect over a billion people worldwide and result in more than 1.5 million deaths each year. In Malaysia, an estimated 1.93% of the population suffers from serious fungal infections annually, amounting to over 590,000 cases. Among these, recurrent vaginal candidiasis is particularly prevalent, with over 500,000 cases reported each year. Fungal infections are especially dangerous for immunocompromised individuals, such as those with HIV/AIDS, cancer patients, and people in intensive care units.
Malaysia’s tropical climate creates an ideal environment for fungi like Aspergillus, Cryptococcus, and Histoplasma. Despite the growing need, mycology diagnostics have lagged behind fields like bacteriology and virology, with many fungal infections remaining undetected, due to limited diagnostic capabilities, and monitoring of antifungal resistance.
“Lablink’s mycology reference laboratory is here to unlock the potential of comprehensive mycology testing - we will serve as a vital hub, providing healthcare providers with access to specialized expertise, cutting edge technologies and comprehensive testing capabilities.,” said Dolly Lim, Chief Executive Officer, Lablink Medical Laboratory.
Lablink now offers comprehensive test services including fungal cultures and identification, susceptibility testing, molecular diagnostics, and next-generation sequencing (NGS).
This new service is part of Lablink’s mission to continuously develop and introduce specialised solutions for clinicians, enabling more accurate diagnoses and targeted treatments.
