On October 22, 2024, the World Anti-Corruption Conference (WACC) will convene global leaders, experts, and policymakers at Rangsit University, Bangkok. Hosted by the International Strategy Institute (ISI) in collaboration with Rangsit University, this year’s conference will emphasize regional cooperation and innovative strategies to combat corruption internationally.

Cheah Chyuan Yong, Chairman of the International Strategy Institute, expressed the significance of WACC 2024, stating, “This conference is a reflection of our continued commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue and cooperation across borders. Corruption is a shared global challenge, and events like these are essential to finding collective solutions.”

Cheah Chyuan Yong delivered closing speech in Jakarta, Indonesia last year.

The conference builds on the success of previous forums, including the highly impactful WACC 2023 in Jakarta, which focused on cross-border cooperation within ASEAN. Since its inception as the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Forum (MACF) in 2019, the initiative has grown beyond regional discussions, evolving into a global platform. Each edition has explored key topics such as governance integrity, economic policies for combating corruption, and the role of civil society in building trust.

This year’s conference will feature prominent voices from across the region. Dr. Arthit Ourairat, Emeritus President and Founder of Rangsit University, will deliver special remarks, setting the tone for the discussions. The event will open with a keynote address from Mr Abhisit Vejjajiva, former Prime Minister of Thailand and Vice Chairman of Saha Pathanapibul Public Company Limited, while Datuk Seri Shamshun Baharin Mohd Jamil, Director General of Malaysia’s National Anti-Financial Crime Centre (NFCC), will deliver the welcome keynote address. The event will conclude with a closing keynote by Professor Vicha Mahakun, Dean of the School of Law at Rangsit University and Senior Advisory Board Member at the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA).

WACC 2024 will bring together thought leaders and specialists from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Malaysia. Discussions will address critical challenges such as balancing national interests with global governance, preventing financial crimes, and closing legal loopholes to ensure accountability. With representatives from multiple countries sharing best practices, the conference aims to advance regional and global efforts to promote transparency and integrity.

Reflecting on the evolution of WACC, Cheah Chyuan Yong emphasized that “while corruption presents an ongoing challenge, the progress made through these forums has demonstrated our shared determination to fight it with renewed focus and collaboration.”

As a partner institution, Rangsit University continues to support efforts to bridge academia and policymaking to address some of the world’s most pressing issues.
