SMK SERI AMPANG KEDAH - Construction waste, also known as debris, encompasses any discarded materials generated during the construction process. Various government agencies provide clear definitions for such waste. Disposal options include exporting it to landfills, incineration, direct on-site reuse by integrating it into ongoing construction or using it as fill dirt, and recycling for new applications when feasible. However, recycling, and repurposing construction and demolition waste can be challenging due to the associated processing costs.

The issue of construction waste has been overlooked, leading to a continual increase in debris. Recognizing this problem, a group of students from SMK Seri Ampang has incorporated the issue into their special project as one of the 15 teams that are participating in the Toyota Eco Youth 2023/24 programme. The team’s aim is to raise awareness within the local community on how to properly dispose the construction materials. One of the key initiatives involves marking areas where construction materials are improperly disposed and to transform these locations into a community garden. The team dreams to see a harmonious society that is living in a clean community and to inspire more younger generations to love their surroundings by taking care the environment.

15 schools nationwide, comprising a total of 60 students and 15 teacher advisors, have embraced the TEY challenge. Each school, represented by four students aged 13 to 16 and one teacher advisor, is undertaking projects that address specific environmental concerns within their communities. The team from SMK Seri Ampang Kedah together with the other teams will be presenting their project at the Exhibition and Closing Ceremony in Putrajaya on 21 – 23 January 2024.
