Entomal Biotech, a multi-award-winning startup, is making waves with its innovative approach to addressing the global challenges of food waste, emissions, and food security. With a mission to transform waste into valuable resources, the company has developed scalable solutions that are both impressive and impactful with the magical powers of an incredible insect - the Black Soldier Flies.
Food waste is not just an economic loss; it contributes significantly to emissions and poses a threat to global food security. Everyday in Malaysia, 17,000 tons of food waste is dumped to landfills, enough to fill the Petronas Twins Towers in just 2 weeks time. Globally, the accumulative emission generated from food waste ranks the third if it were a country, trailing just USA and China. Entomal Biotech tackles this multifaceted issue with cutting-edge solutions that redefine traditional waste management practices.
Scalable Solutions: EMBC and Central Biowaste Conversion Plant
Entomal Biotech introduces two game-changing solutions — the Entomal Mobile Bioconversion System (EMBC) and the Central Biowaste Conversion Plant. EMBC, a decentralised container solution, is already making waves at Taylor's University, Shah Alam Community Recycling Centre, and Sunway Lagoon, with upcoming installations at Le Meridien PJ and Jalan Alor, the food heaven of Malaysia. The company is currently fundraising to establish the first-of-its-kind Central Biowaste Conversion Plant, capable of treating 15 tons of food waste daily using black soldier flies.
The brand’s solutions extend beyond waste reduction. The black soldier fly larvae produced in the process yield high-quality insect protein and frass fertilisers. These downstream products are valuable contributors to sustainable animal feed and agriculture, fostering a circular economy.
The company is at the forefront of groundbreaking research projects with institutions like Taylor's University, UiTM, UMT, and UPM. Research areas include the development of human-consumable ento-snacks, pharmaceutical applications of anti-microbial properties from BSF larvae, and collaborations on aquafeed and chicken feed development.
Awards and Accolades: Global Recognition
Entomal Biotech's commitment to excellence is underscored by its recognition on the global stage. The startup has been named a Global Top 50 Deep Tech Startup at Slingshot 2023, Grand Winner of Petronas Future Tech 3.0, Grant Winner of the Khazanah Impact Innovation Challenge 2023, and Taiwan Tech Innovation Excellence Award among other accolades.
Entomal Biotech has already left an indelible mark locally, working with FGV to turn palm oil waste into animal feed. The company is also serving clients in Indonesia, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, and Singapore, contributing to a more sustainable global food supply chain.
At the helm of Entomal Biotech are Yanni, Vic, and Thomas — a trio with shared passion and extensive expertise in environmental sustainability. Their combined knowledge in breeding and rearing technologies for black soldier flies ensures the delivery of quality and scalable production.
In a world grappling with the challenges of waste and sustainability, Entomal Biotech stands as a beacon of innovation, leading the charge toward a greener, more resilient future.
