KUALA LUMPUR: Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd proudly reaffirms its long standing commitment to sustainable development, demonstrated by its solar initiatives aimed at driving renewable energy generation. The company had embraced green technology practices to not only optimise its operating costs but also align its efforts with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) in reducing carbon emissions by 2040.

A total of 396 strategically selected sites throughout Peninsular Malaysia, featuring the company’s sewage treatment plants (STP), has been identified as both feasible and commercially viable for the installation of solar photovoltaics (PVs) under Phase 1. Upon successful completion of the implementation phase, IWK will be able to generate 22,781 megawatt-hour (MWh) of solar energy per year, reflecting an annual total savings on electricity of RM1.9 million by 2026.

Leveraging the strengths of both public and private sectors, IWK is working closely with experts proficient in solar PV installations in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. The company signed Renewable Energy Power Purchase Agreement (REPPA) with four proponents to undertake the project in several packages, with a total capital expenditure (CAPEX) of RM84 million to be invested by these four proponents for the 396 site-installation.

In addition, a Phase 2 implementation of another 583 sites is undergoing a detailed evaluation, which can potentially generate 21,500 MWh of solar energy per year contributing additional annual savings of RM1.8 million by 2027. Upon completion of phase 1 and 2, IWK expects to reduce 34.4 kilotonne carbon dioxide equivalent (ktCO2e) of carbon emissions by 2027.

The solar PV project initiative will operate under the Self-Consumption (SelCo) model, where all solar energy generated will be utilised at IWK’s respective STPs. Detailed evaluations were conducted across 8,874 STPs and network power stations (NPS) to determine the viability of installing the solar PVs.

“It is exciting to witness firsthand one of the solar energy generation sites used by IWK for its plant operations. This initiative taken by IWK is a great example of a company’s dedication to promoting sustainable development, aligning seamlessly and contributing towards the implementation of NETR,” said Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, in a working visit to IWK’s Pantai 1 Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Kuala Lumpur.

“IWK remains committed to environmental sustainability. We are adopting various green technologies at our selected STPs such as the installations of solar PVs, as well as reusing our biogas byproduct generated from our treatment processes to power up our plants. These are some examples on how IWK is supporting the nation’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and use of renewable energy,” said Chief Executive Officer of IWK, Narendran Maniam.

The company will continue to prioritise sustainable innovation and collaborate with stakeholders to address the changing environmental landscape and realise its goals of reducing environmental impact. This approach will create long-term value that will benefit its operations, the environment, society, and the economy.
