Xin Nian Kuai Le! Welcome to the year of Rabbit in 2023! This year, Chinese New Year comes early in January and with that being said, spring cleaning is awaiting us! It plays a huge part in this annual tradition because tidying up your house before the new year symbolises getting rid of all the old or bad things and make room for this year’s abundance of prosperity.

In order to ease your job, we have prepared a checklist for you on what are the 5 things you must never keep at your home this Chinese New Year.

We love to store up food at home and have the tendency of keep buying more food while still having a lot in the storage. This could potentially lead to storing expired food unnoticeably, which you may accidentally consume, and develop food poisoning.

Nobody loves to fall sick, especially on the first day of Chinese New Year as there is this taboo that says if a person were to brew herbal medicine or take medicine on the first day of Chinese New Year, it is believed that he or she will get sick for the whole year. Well, whether it is a myth or not, it is still best to check all your food in the storage, and ensure it is not expired yet so that will prevent you from unnecessary health's issue in the long run.

Take this time to tidy up your shoes closet as most of it could have been sitting unused for the past 3 years due to the pandemic, and also that means you can make space for new shoes, which means shopping time, yay! Don't be reluctant to throw away your broken shoes, or the God of Wealth will bypass your door in the New Year. However, it is advisable to buy your shoes before the Chinese New Year, and not in the first few days of the Chinese New Year. This is because the word "shoes" in Cantonese sounds very similar to the word "rough”. So, buying new shoes at the wrong timing might usher in a rough, bumpy year for you! In the meantime, throw away those ragged clothes and replace them with new ones to keep your wealth safe all year round. Well, it might seem costly to get new clothes but once in a while, why not right?

Along with lucky dishes, auspicious plants and flowers are important aspects of the Chinese New Year. If you have wilted greeneries at home, replacing it with fresh and exuberant flower plants will not only benefit your home's aesthetic look in welcoming your guests, but will also bring your family good luck for the new year. There are some plants and flowers that symbolise wealth, prosperity, good fortune, and abundance, such as Tangerine or Kumquat Trees, Orchids, Lucky Bamboo, Peonies or Flamingo Lilies. Buy yourself some flower blossoms that bring wealth this year!

Did you know wooden chopsticks are a hidden danger for every household? Wooden chopsticks are an indispensable piece of tableware for some Chinese families, especially if you have elderly members at home who use them for their daily meals. In many families, a pair of chopsticks can be used for one or two years, or as long as they want. Some people won’t even replace a new one if the chopsticks aren't broken, ain’t you too? However, chopsticks that have been used for a long time will breed various moulds, and may cause diarrhea and vomiting. This is because wooden chopsticks are prone to small scratches and cracks, which will easily trap food residues and oil stains that are more susceptible to mould growth and easily hide various bacteria that are harmful to health. It is recommended to replace new sets of wooden chopsticks to protect your loved ones from potential illnesses.

Don’t let those uninvited “guests” like cockroaches and ants invade your house, they can contaminate food by crawling over open food sources, causing food diarrhoea to your family and friends. With many gatherings during celebration, food crumbs or drink spills can sometimes be left unattended, which leads to cockroaches and ants being attracted to those food hot spots.

Besides cockroaches and ants, bed bugs are another pest that most homeowners are afraid of. The process of getting rid of bed bugs is exhausting, expensive, and emotionally draining. Ensure your luggage doesn’t have bed bugs hitchhiking on your luggages when you travel back this Chinese New Year.
