When it comes to plastics injection moulding, no company does it better than Rosti Group, a global organization with 8 manufacturing facilities, including Malaysia. Miller Brown, Managing Director for Rosti Malaysia, shares what makes Rosti the world-leading manufacturer, providing insights on how to uncompromisingly deliver excellence daily.

Miller Brown, Managing Director for Rosti Malaysia

Firstly, it required constant innovation from Miller and his team, together with integration into additional manufacturing and sourcing capabilities to meet the demands of their customers. "When Rosti first invested in Asia in 2001 our facilities were that of a typical high-end custom moulding company and the concept of a custom moulder was still relatively easy and clear to define. However, the changing nature of manufacturing globally has led to a dramatic shift in Rosti’s role within the Supply Chain and we can no longer consider ourselves as a custom moulder", Miller shared.

The transformation of Rosti Group allowed the organization to expand their portfolios and diversify its offerings with on-demand services such as R&D, product design, tooling design and management, supply chain management, manufacturing and international logistics.

"The demands of our customers, extending their purchasing strategies to include the outsourcing of complete modules have been the catalyst for Rosti to develop itself from a high-end moulding company to a contract manufacturer."

The aspect which makes Rosti Group stands out from the rest would be its ability to deliver its customers requirement within the timespan of simply 72 hours, and it would not be possible without the existence of the Rosti’s Digital Innovation Lab.

"On the state-of-the-art equipment, the team prints core and cavity tooling inserts, which permits moulding on the lab’s dedicated machine in the design intent resin. Moulded components are then 3D scanned and compared to customer master CAD data for dimensional stability. Within 72 hours, customers can arrive at the Digital Innovation Lab and see their components being moulded and measured, ready for functional product testing."

The expertise of Injection Moulding by Rosti Malaysia has allowed them to contribute to the fight against COVID-19, through its partnership with a Global Molecular Diagnostics company, by manufacturing an effective COVID-19 saliva test, with the ability to provide laboratory-quality results in just 15 minutes. This partnership allows non-medical personnel to obtain fast, on-site detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus at the point of need.

The clients' CEO said, "We have been extraordinarily pleased with the knowledge, capability and commitment that Rosti has demonstrated with this project. They are truly committed to a collective mission of solving the issues created by COVID-19 and worked with us so that our Company can provide tools to those at point of need to positively impact peoples lives."

Another astounding feat Rosti Malaysia has achieved was to be resilient and deliver excellence, during the pandemic. "When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, many of our employees started to work remotely and we needed to ramp up digital engagement with customers", Miller shared.

The greatest achievement during the pandemic was implementing a range of measures to keep each of the eight facilities around the world operational when most of the worldwide manufacturing efforts were placed on hold, which ensured the safety of around 3,200 employees in the process. The operations in Malaysia recently awarded Platinum by the Responsible Business Alliance.

Rosti was able to showcase its production facility remotely through virtual online tours and managed to engage clients through our innovation and knowledge centre. Supported by third party audits, this change of approach has led to the award of three brand-new manufacturing contracts with brand-new customers.

One of the key focus of Rosti Group is to ensure a sustainable approach to their manufacturing process which creates a positive environmental impact. Miller shared that with the organization's ability to directly affect product design, material selection and waste handling, Rosti can commit to creating sustainable solutions with passion.

"As a plastic moulding company and contract manufacturer, Rosti sits at the centre of the supply chain and has a duty and an opportunity to make a positive environmental impact on the plastics industry. Continuously working with our customers & suppliers to help build sustainability into all the products we manufacture and process we develop."

Miller also added that the organization is seeing a shift from a linear economy to a circular economy, with material selection and end-of-life product recycling becoming critical considerations. Therefore, the team at Rosti makes detailed analyses of new products at the concept design stage, so that they better fit the circular economy model. These analyses range from material selection, tooling management, production technology, and the products’ potential for repair or end of life recycling.

Rosti Malaysia plays a huge role in the manufacturing industry on a worldwide scale. Established in 2012, Rosti Malaysia's mission was to support existing customer’s manufacturing needs in the region. A change in the customer’s manufacturing strategy meant that some products manufactured by Rosti in Northern Asia had to be transferred to Malaysia.

The Johor facility houses state of the art Sumitomo Demag injection moulding machines and a fully controlled ESD protected assembly area, fully enhancing Rosti’s highly specialised capabilities for supporting all its customers’ needs. The world-class manufacturing facility, allied with world-class supply chain management skills, product design and 72-hour prototyping services have provided Rosti with a significant amplification effect, allowing it – through lower costs and time to market – to drive value for its customers.

The value proposition that Rosti offers, including design, engineering, supply chain management, enhanced by the addition of its innovation laboratory, has made Rosti Malaysia attractive to a diversified spread of end customers from the automotive, medical and consumer electronics markets.
