CYBERJAYA, 21 MARCH 2021: The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) today completes its #SayaDigital on-ground pilot programme with the visit to the Orang Asal settlement in Bukit Lanjan. Serving as a baseline study in the lead up to the #SayaDigital national launch, a series of three on-ground outreach and nine online initiatives have been carried out, immediately benefitting 301 of participants from the vulnerable socioeconomic groups.

“The success of this campaign will enable the rakyat to be digitally-capable and fully utilise the infrastructure and benefits provided by our digital economy. Empowering them with digital knowledge and skills, from all walks of life, will enable Malaysia to survive and thrive in these uncertain times, driving us to a shared prosperity for all as espoused in the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint (MyDIGITAL),” said Surina Shukri, CEO of MDEC.

The #SayaDigital pilot projects (as part of the #SayaDigital Movement) were conducted to create awareness and empower the rakyat from vulnerable socioeconomic groups to embrace digitalisation in line with the nation’s Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 and the newly-announced MyDIGITAL.

The #SayaDigital Movement was launched in August 2020 and participants were trained in Basic Digital Literacy Training.

“In a world transformed overnight by the pandemic, it is imperative that we embrace digitalisation and 4IR technologies. We at MDEC will not let up in carrying out our mandate in ensuring we bring not only innovation and advancement in the workplace and businesses but also equipping the Rakyat with digital knowledge and skills, especially from the vulnerable socioeconomic groups. Our expansion of digital literacy will leave no one behind, in our push towards Malaysia 5.0 and being the Heart of Digital ASEAN,” said Datuk Wira Dr Hj. Rais Hussin Mohamed Ariff, Chairman, MDEC.

The #SayaDigital Movement is targeted towards B40 (bottom 40 percent income earners) families, non-income groups, senior citizens and youths. Its goals are to demonstrate to these targeted communities that going digital makes life easier, allows them to expand their business, helps generate income and empower careers of the future.

At each site, the local community will answer the Digital Readiness Assessment to gauge their digital literacy level at the #SayaDigital Kiosk / Booth. They are then determined which Basic Digital Literacy Learning Modules they will undergo.

Local youths inducted during the pilot projects were trained as GENG #SayaDigital. Training includes Basic Digital Literacy Programme which encompasses eCommunications, Online Banking and eWallets and Digital Services Applications. This in turn creates a cascading effect as these youths transfer their newly-attained skills to their families and community. 25 youths were already trained to date via this initiative.

“It’s a fun, interactive workshop and the trainers were helpful and insightful. I have learned a lot today and I am sure I will be able to make use of this new knowledge in the new norm and challenges we are living in,” said Encik Dawit, 42, a resident of the Desa Temuan.
