Crime

• The MCMC said it is investigating AI-manipulated social media content involving footage of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad mourning the death of his wife, Dr Hasmah Ali.
  
  In a statement today, the commission said it had contacted the relevant social media platforms and would take action under existing laws, including the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, if offences were detected.
  
  It also urged the public not to create or share manipulated content that could mislead others or cause harm, and to verify content before sharing it.

Politics

• The prominent Orang Asli rights activist and lawyer Siti Kasim has joined Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM).
  
  In a statement today, she said she had never joined a political party because she valued the freedom to speak her mind and act according to her conscience, regardless of who was in power. This changed after the PBM leadership agreed to respect her independence.

  

  “For years, I have fought for the rights of Orang Asli, constitutional freedoms, equality, and people whose voices are too often ignored. I want to bring that commitment into a political platform and help turn those struggles into meaningful change,” she said.

Nepal disaster

• One of the 55 Malaysians previously uncontactable following the disaster in Nepal has been confirmed safe and has returned home, said Malaysia Solidarity: Families in Hope (Masfih).
  
  Group spokesperson R Manivannan said the Chinese Malaysian solo traveller was stranded after roads and bridges were destroyed, but eventually reached the Malaysian embassy in Kathmandu on Oct 1 and returned home the next morning.
  
  In a statement today, he said the survivor’s safe return had renewed hope among families still awaiting news of the remaining 54 uncontactable Malaysians.
  
  He added that the group was still seeking meetings with the Attorney-General’s Chambers, Bank Negara, and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
