Dr Hasmah passes away at age 100
Dr Hasmah Ali, the wife of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, passed away today at the National Heart Institute (IJN).
She turned 100 on her birthday on July 12.

Dr Hasmah Ali, the wife of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, passed away today at the National Heart Institute (IJN).
She turned 100 on her birthday on July 12.
Bernama reported that her son, Mokhzani Mahathir, confirmed the passing.
Hasmah, better known as Siti Hasmah, was reportedly one of the first Malay women doctors when she began serving in the mid-1950s.
She has been married to Mahathir since 1956, and marked 70 years together in August.
They have seven children.
In 2024, Hasmah clarified during an interview that she never had the name "Siti", but that name was affixed to her by others due to the surging popularity of the name in the 1990s.
She then asked to be known as Dr Hasmah.

What a tragic day for the country....
My sincere condolences to Tun M and his family. Dr. Hasmah has and will always be the prime example of a faithful mother, PM's wife and leader. Rest in peace.
Borrowing WH Auden's poem, a little changed here and there: She was his North, his South, his East and West, His working week and his Sunday rest, His noon, his midnight, his talk, his song; I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong. Deep loss to Tun M, and to the nation.
