Felda

  • Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the cabinet will discuss a proposal for a forensic audit into the management of Felda, Bernama reported.

Anwar responded to a question about Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s suggestion that a forensic audit be conducted to determine whether there had been abuse of power, breach of trust, or governance violations in the government-linked agency’s management.

On Aug 23, Zahid reportedly said that a management audit alone was insufficient, given that issues involving the agency had persisted for a long time and resulted in losses amounting to billions of ringgit.

Last week, Bernama reported Anwar as saying that he would wait for the special task force’s complete report on Felda’s management before making any official announcement.

He said the special task force has begun its work, and the investigation’s findings are expected soon.

Environment

  • Indonesia is taking enforcement action against six forestry concession holders after fires burned more than 1,500 hectares of land under their management across Kalimantan. The companies operate in West, Central, and East Kalimantan.

The companies have been ordered to strengthen their fire-control measures and restore areas affected by the fires within specified timeframes.

One company in West Kalimantan also had its business licence suspended after extensive and recurring fires were recorded in its concession.

Bernama reported the Indonesian Forestry Ministry saying that the fires remain widespread, with satellite monitoring recording 341 high-confidence hotspots across the four Kalimantan provinces as of 9pm yesterday.

These comprised 129 in West Kalimantan, 107 in East Kalimantan, 85 in Central Kalimantan, and 20 in South Kalimantan. A further 641 medium-confidence hotspots were recorded in West, Central, and South Kalimantan.
