'We want Umno, but not Zahid'

PAS MUKTAMAR | PAS is not keen on wooing Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi due to the status of his criminal cases, according to its deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

He said the party has reservations about cooperating with Zahid because he has not been absolved of his 47 corruption charges, despite the prosecution having withdrawn their cases against the deputy prime minister.

“Zahid’s criminal case was only granted a DNAA (discharge not amounting to acquittal), he was not acquitted yet.

“So, given the DNAA status, he can still be convicted if there is evidence,” Tuan Ibrahim (above) told a press conference after the conclusion of the 70th PAS muktamar in Temerloh, Pahang earlier today.

He was asked to comment on Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki’s remarks, where he questioned PAS’ logic of trying to woo Umno support sans Zahid.

This comes after PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang admitted that his party was still open to accepting Umno, but they are only trying to attract the support of Umno leaders not aligned with Zahid.

Adding further, Tuan Ibrahim said the party also noticed how the public had reacted to the attorney-general’s decision to withdraw its 47 charges against Zahid, which he said “was not a small feat”.

“Because this involves the issue of law and integrity,” he stressed.

Muhyiddin’s case still in court

When asked about Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin who also has court cases, the Kubang Kerian MP said there is a difference between Muhyiddin’s case and Zahid’s.

He pointed out that Muhyiddin’s case is still in court and prima facie hasn’t been established.

For the record, the charges against Zahid were withdrawn after the court found there was a prima facie case and ordered him to enter his defence.

On another matter, Tuan Ibrahim told reporters that PAS would continue with its baiah tradition where the party requires every election candidate to take an oath saying they will stay loyal after winning a seat.

This comes after PAS made a move to include anti-party hopping provisions in its constitution last night.

Hi said the baiah has a “spiritual element” that can ensure PAS representatives would not turn their back on the party after winning an election.
