DAP will be fielding its legal team to assist the man who insulted a beer promoter when he is interviewed by the police.

“He has promised to cooperate (with the authorities),” Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng said when met at the Parliament lobby today.

Lim had lodged a report over a video depicting Mohamad Edi Mohamad Riyars, or Edi Rejang, berating a beer promoter at a local hypermarket on Sunday.

The police are investigating the matter under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which deals with offences involving words or gestures with the intention insult the modesty of a person.

This law carries a maximum five-year jail sentence, a fine or both upon conviction.

Following the incident, Lim said. that he was contacted by Edi. “He came to my office yesterday,” he explained.

Lim then organised a meeting which involved representatives from Bersatu, PKR and Amanah.

Subsequently, Edi recorded a video in which he apologised to the beer promoter and expressed his regret over the incident. 

He said he got angry when he saw the promoter and recorded his tirade.

He claimed to be unaware that she was working within the designated area for non-halal produce at the time.
