Malaysians have expressed shock at the failed coup attempt in Turkey, with Pakatan Harapan urging the Turkish to change goverment through peaceful means.

"This military attempt to force regime change in Turkey is a blatant disregard for the democratic process and totally undermines the will of the Turkish people.

"Harapan stands in solidarity with President Erdogan and the Turkish people.

"We pray for the safety of the Turkish people who are now amassing on the streets as a show of support for democracy," said Harapan leaders PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu in a joint statement today.

"Attempts to change the Turkish government must take place through peaceful, constitutional and democratic means, and any attempts to affect change through military intervention must be rejected," they added.

Abim president Mohamad Raimi Ab Rahim meanwhile condemned the coup and said the NGO is closely monitoring the situation through their official correspondent and validated sources of information inside the country.

He said while the government has regained control of its capital Ankara, the situation on the ground was still uncertain.

"We also take this opportunity to call for all Malaysian to pray for the safety of Malaysian Embassy, our diplomatic corps, students and Malaysian citizens across Turkey," he said in a statement.

'Avoid bloodshed please'

Ikram president Mohd Parid Sheikh Ahmad also condemned the coup attempt and called for bloodshed to be avoided.

"Ikram calls on all parties to settle their political issues through constitutional and democratic means, and reject any sort of violence and bloodshed," he said in a statement.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Najib Razak has asked Malaysians now stranded in Turkey to remain calm and stay safe.
