Amid intense speculation that Muhyiddin Yassin and Shafie Apdal will be suspended, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak only announced that a division chief has been sacked.

Speaking to reporters, he said the supreme council made the unanimous decision to expel Gopeng Umno Wanita chief Hamidah Osman ( photo ) on disciplinary grounds.

"Other matters were also discussed but no decision was made," he said after chairing the supreme council meeting in Parliament.

Hamidah was slapped with a show-cause letter when she went to the Subang Airport to welcome former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

She has also been critical of Najib and even called for his resignation.

Both Muhyiddin, the Umno deputy president, and Shafie, who is vice-president, were absent from the meeting that started at about 6pm.

Najib, who rushed off after the press conference, did not take any questions.

He earlier noted that there was nothing unusual for the Umno supreme council meeting to be held in Parliament.

"We needed to be close to the Dewan Rakyat in case there is a bloc vote being called. There is nothing unusual. The Pakatan parties do it all the time," he said.
