Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad has asked Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to prove the RM2.6 billion deposited into the prime minister's personal bank accounts is indeed a donation from an Arab source.
Mahathir said this after Zahid claimed he met with a representative of the multi-billion ringgit donor who confirmed the donation supposedly intended to help Umno remain in power.
"The new deputy prime minister says he has seen the Arab who gave the money, then let him give proof that this Arab has huge sums of money to give away to Malaysia and many other countries.
"What is the source of this money. What business does he do? What is the name of the bank he uses?
"Show his account in the bank, the cheques he issued, particularly the US$700 million. The recipient bank should be holding these cheques," he said in his blog posting today.
Mahathir said all this information could have been verified by the special task force investigating the massive deposits had it not been dismantled.
"But Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak dismantled the task force by sacking the attorney-general, sending the head of the MACC on leave, and accusing Bank Negara of leaking government secrets," he said.
No credibility
Mahathir noted that while MACC was still investigating the RM2.6 billion deposits, it was now an 'emasculated' agency.
"If Najib is serious about investigating his RM2.6 billion ringgit in Ambank, he should reconstitute the original task force.
"The new task force filled with his people has no credibility," he said.
Newly-appointed attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali had said the special task force would be renamed National Revenue Recovery Enforcement Team (NRRET) but will have nothing to do with 1MDB.
