Prime Minister Najib Razak risks committing the same crime that de facto PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim was found guilty of in 1999, said a DAP MP.
This, said Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua, is if the PM continues to pressure the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to clear his name of any wrongdoing in the 1MDB scandal.
“If Najib Razak, or other ministers for that matter, continue to pressure MACC to ‘clear’ the prime minister, then they will be guilty of the same alleged crime Anwar Ibrahim was found guilty of in 1999.
“Back then, Anwar was sentenced to six years’ jail for using undue influence on two Special Branch police officers investigating him for alleged sexual crimes.
“While Malaysians believed that the charges against Anwar were trumped up, those against Najib Razak will be blatantly obvious because the latter has been consistently making false public statements on behalf of MACC,” said Pua in a statement today.
He was responding to the PM repeatedly telling the public that he has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the scandal surrounding the RM2.6 billion banked into his private accounts.
'Cleared? Quite the contrary'
Pua said over the past month, Najib and his “tailcoat of BN ministers and leaders” have repeatedly harped on the claim that the prime minister has been cleared.
He cited for example how Najib told the Bandar Tun Razak Umno division meeting two weeks ago “[…] that's why MACC has said it is not corruption and not 1MDB money”.
“Last week, he ‘cleared’ himself again claiming that ‘there is no regulation in respect to political donation. So you cannot say what is right and what is wrong, okay?’,” added Pua.
He pointed out the MACC had never in its past statements actually cleared the PM, and is in fact planning to question the PM over the accounts.
Meanwhile the probe in to SRC International Sdn Bhd and the RM2.6 billion are still on-going according to MACC chief commissioner Abu Kassim Mohamed, said Pua.
“In fact, the MACC chided the prime minister, without naming him in person, for trying vainly to ‘clear’ himself,” he said, citing MACC’s call that no party issue statements to confuse the public and create a negative perception of the commission.
“The commission has also previously stated that they ‘would also ask Najib to give an explanation to the MACC about the donation he received’.
“Hence it cannot be clearer that the MACC has never cleared the prime minister for receiving such dubious and suspicious ‘donation’ from the Middle East,” said Pua.
Weeks after The Wall Street Journal exposed that RM2.6 billion had been deposited into Najib’s private accounts before the 13 th general election, the fact was finally admitted claiming the money was a donation by wealthy Arabs to Umno.
Over the past week, all manner of explanations for the generosity of the donors have been expounded by top Umno leaders, from gratitude to helping fight the Islamic State (IS) to defeating DAP , allegedly because it is backed by the Jews.
However in its latest allegation, Sarawak Report has claimed that most of the money in the account had subsequently been transferred out of the country.
