Newly-elected PAS central working committee member Mohd Zuhdi Marzuki believes the new ulama leadership chosen by the delegates at last week’s muktamar will transform PAS into an even bigger player in Malaysian politics.
PAS who retained incumbent president Abdul Hadi Awang and purged almost all progressive faction leaders from their central, youth and women's wings, is on the correct track to rebuild Islamic civilisation in Malaysia, he proclaimed.
“The new PAS leadership are for those who have the belief that it will bring to bring to the country and society a fair, Islamic system.
“The new leadership is also supported by professionals from various fields of science and technology and not only those with a legal background,” said Zuhdi in a statement today.
He claims that the new PAS line-up will win over Malay voters from Umno.
He noted this trend had already started and could be seen in the outcome of the recent Rompin by-election which saw decrease in Umno's majority.
Non-Muslim support
Zuhdi, who used to head PAS’ research centre, said the Islamic party was now building up its strength and had even managed to influence non-Malay voters amongst Sabah and Sarawak bumiputera.
He added he also wanted to see PAS contest in non-Malay majority areas and towards this their newest wing, the PAS Supporters Club, has been able to play a crucial part in dealing with non-Muslims.
Zuhdi had in March predicted that the party would split into two camps after last week's party election.
He was proven true after the pro-ulama (religious scholars) faction won major victories in all positions against the progressives.
