Former PAS central working committee member Hanipa Maidin said the Islamic party will be branded as ‘hypocritical’ if its members do not resign from all their posts in the Selangor government.
Hanipa said that the motion to sever ties with DAP had made Pakatan irrelevant as PAS cannot claim they are part of Pakatan without DAP.
“The new leadership in PAS should not care about losing PAS’ interest in Pakatan governed states especially Selangor. They should stand by their principles and gain Allah’s blessing.
“If they want to maintain PAS’ interests in Selangor and at the same time defend their principles, it will show they are inconsistent and not sincere. In other words, they will be seen as hypocrites,” he said in a statement today.
In the PAS muktamar last week, Abdul Hadi Awang and his backers completed a near clean sweep of the PAS elections , winning almost all the central committee seats, and taking complete control of PAS Youth and muslimat wings.
Abdul Hadi crushed his challenger Ahmad Awang to retain the PAS presidency, securing 80 percent of the 1,160 votes cast.
His new deputy, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, secured 76 percent of the votes and ousted two-term deputy president Mohamad Sabu.
All three incumbent vice-presidents - Husam Musa, Salahuddin Ayub and Mahfuz Omar - were routed and replaced with Idris Ahmad, Nik Amar Abdullah and Iskandar Ab Samad.
As for the 18 central committee posts up for grabs, the only person on Abdul Hadi's 'chai' who failed to secure a seat was Kamaruzaman Mohamad.
Progressives obliterated
Hanipa, along with other moderates and progressives were obliterated and they have been trying to stay away from the central leadership.
Mohamad and Mujahid Yusof Rawa ( photo ) have also resigned from the Penang government following the muktamar.
Hanipa also said the purge is a sign that PAS is no more inclusive and were now the opposite of its tagline “PAS for all.”
He said the landslide win might take PAS further away from the centre-stage of politics as PAS is run by only the religious authorities.
“The issue whether the PAS leadership now is a ‘chai’ leader ship as they were decided through bloc voting as opposed to being elected due to performance, experience and merit, is no longer a question.
The truth is that the PAS leadership is now clearly made up of a majority of ustaz and religious people who are close to the president and expected to unanimously support every decision he makes,” he said.
Hanipa referred to Ulama chief Mahfodz Mohamad’s recent interview with Mingguan Malaysia , in which he said the progressives had made the work in PAS difficult and Abdul Hadi had to make decisions which contravened the central committee.
“Now with majority of committee members being supportive ulama, their job is easier as everyone knows PAS’ policy. Every ustaz knows that and their loyalty to the president will be stronger
“It is clear from Mahfodz’s ( photo ) statement that all this while, the professionals, also known as progressives, were the main obstacles against the PAS president getting the decisions he wanted.
With the progressives losing, according to the ulama wing chief’s logic, the president’s work will be simplified, said Hanipa.
“With the progressives out of the current PAS leadership, they should not have any problems continuing their mission and vision. They should now be consistent to their hardline approach and never look back,” he declared.
