本书为2014年“重返马来亚：政治与历史思想”国际学术研讨会的成果。不仅收录十篇研究论文，也包括现场评议和讨论内容，可窥探来自马来西亚丶新加坡丶印尼丶香港丶东京和冲绳等地的知识人如何重返马来亚的历史语境，挖掘和当代社会相关联的问题意识。

聚焦在“马来亚”，梳理独立前后不同思潮的交锋以及竞争关系，以及人们对于“国家想像”所勾勒出的思想蓝图，有助于从长时段追溯新马独立建国丶分家前后形构的历史问题，以及马来亚问题如何影响马来西亚合并等重要议题。

重返马来亚，也是去殖民的清理工程。它提供我们一个反思契机，思考在走向独立建国前期，仍未有泾渭分明的国家边界时，如何处理和殖民者的关系、反殖的抗争意义以及建国的理想主义等；而这一些又如何在后殖民的语境，受到冷战历史框架的影响，影响我们的独立意识丶当代视野和论述。

This book is a collection of essays presented at the 2014 Revisiting Malaya conference; it includes ten research essays and transcriptions from the discussions and Q&A sessions. Focusing on "Malaya", this book tackles a variety of issues related to the contested thoughts during and after the independence period, as well as the national imagination projected by different communities. This helps trace the long history of nation-building and independence of Singapore and Malay（si）a, uncovering the historical problems created during the merger and division period. Revisiting Malaya is also a decolonial process, for it provides us an opportunity to return to the historical period when national borders were still uncertain, and to rethink the relationship with the colonizers, the meanings of anti-colonial resistance and the idealism of nation-building. Furthermore, it questions how have these problems affected our contemporary discourse in the context of postcolonialism and the history of the Cold War.
