Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) incarcerated leader P Uthayakumar's alleged foot injury is worsening, said his fiancée S Indradevi, who lodged a police report on his behalf at the Brickfields police station this morning.

Indradevi, who yesterday visited Uthayakumar at the Kamunting detention centre near Taiping, said the swelling of his left foot, believed to be caused by a fractured toe, was getting worse and probably infected.

p uthayakumar sedition trial 030209 01 Uthayakumar is one of the five Hindraf leaders held under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for their role in orchestrating a mass protest against the government in late 2007.

During her visit, Indradevi learnt that Uthayakumar had complained of severe pain and was subsequently brought to the Taiping Hospital last Thursday for medical attention.

No medication given

"The doctor who had examined Uthaya explained that the toe was infected but did not proceed to take X-ray of his foot. He instead asked the authorities who accompanied Uthaya to bring him back the following day for treatment.

uthayakumar_toe_06022009 "The doctor also said that he would refer Uthaya to an orthopaedic surgeon but although he waited for the prison authorities to take him (to the hospital), no one came and he was once again declined treatment," said Indradevi to Malaysiakini.

According to the report that was lodged, he was neither given access to his medical notes nor any medication for his pain and the swollen foot.
